Drawing contest to help children learn about co-ops and businesses

ABRAM-VILLAGE – September 23, 2022 – Several community, co-op and economic development partners have joined forces again this year to host a drawing contest for children in grades K-6. The goal is to encourage children to learn more about co-ops and businesses in their area – and to give them a chance to win great cash or merchandise prizes.

Held on the occasion Co-op and Small Business Week (Oct. 16-22), the contest simply invites youth to draw a picture of a local co-op or business on an entry form and submit it to their teacher at Évangéline School or in a designated box at the Wellington Co-op.

The contest begins Oct. 1. Participants can pick up an entry form at Évangéline School or the Wellington Co-op, or they can download the form from https://bit.ly/3QWpnA9. Participants will then have until Sunday, Oct. 16, to submit their drawings. Their creations will be displayed on the walls of the Co-op and, if necessary, in the hallways of Place du Village mini-mall for the community to enjoy. On Oct. 21, draws will be held to determine the winners of the numerous prizes that are available, including those of greater value provided by Wellington Co-op and MacDonald Insurance & Investments (The Co-operators).

Contest organizers encourage parents and grandparents to talk to children about local co-ops and businesses and perhaps even take them on a tour to see or visit these places. The contest, which is perfectly aligned with the « Love Local, PEI » campaign, seeks to help children understand the importance of these co-ops and businesses to the local economy and to the survival of their region, both from the perspective of the services and products they provide and the jobs they create and the charitable contributions they make to the community.

Youth are encouraged to be creative in their artwork. They do not have to limit themselves to drawing the building of the chosen co-op or business. They can, for example, draw an employee doing his or her job or a customer coming to ask for a service.

Contest partners include the Wellington Co-op, the Provincial Credit Union, MacDonald Insurance & Investments (The Co-operators), the Evangeline School-Community Council, RDÉE Prince Edward Island, the Wellington Rural Action Centre and the Acadian and Francophone Chamber of Commerce of PEI. One of the main prize contributors is Shop & Play in Borden-Carleton.
